WHO ARE WE?
My passion for architecture and building excellence goes back a long way.
As a young lad, I loved tinkering around with Dad’s tools making stuff in the garage, or building tree huts down by the Halswell River. When a friend’s dad offered me a labouring job in his construction company, I gladly accepted. It was a great introduction to building; it trained me physically and taught me the building basics.
It also cemented my passion for building. From here, I moved into housing construction, focussing my apprenticeship on architectural hill sites. I loved the challenge this brought, and I was in awe of the knowledge and skills the carpenters I was learning from had. This really set the bar for me and, looking back, it was here I developed my drive for perfection and detail.
I bought my first house while undertaking my apprenticeship and worked as a foreman for a few years, before deciding to venture out on a good ol’ O.E with my wife, Helen. We based ourselves in London for two years and traveled as much as we could. Our top three moments were watching the sunrise in the Sahara Desert, enjoying a proper "white Christmas" in a stone cottage in North Yorkshire, and sailing around Croatia. We had a blast.
In between travels, I worked as a carpenter and found the trade in the UK to be very different from back home in NZ. There wasn’t much timber framing work going on, just lots of bricks and steel. I gained some interesting skills during this time, like learning to demolish the ground floor wall of a three-story double brick house whilst supporting the other two stories in order to extend the ground floor area. I must admit being a bit nervous the first time I was thrown this challenge! I also got to see some incredibly grand houses, full of history, and work with materials that aren’t so commonplace in NZ, like hand-carved oak doors from a Duke’s estate.
After a couple of years in the hustle and bustle of London town, we headed home, via Europe and Canada. Our daughter, Charlotte, was born two months after we got back, followed by our son, Franklin, about 18 months later. By this stage, I had been offered an opportunity to take on a project myself and this marked the beginning of Brewster Building.
Over the last few years, Brewster Building has grown steadily. My focus has changed from simply building houses, to giving greater focus to the business side of building, including developing working relationships with suppliers and sub-trades, investing in project management software, getting more involved with designers and architects and continuously finding new ways to ensure a professional service, enjoyable experience, and exceptional results for our clients.
